Back in Dallas in 2006 I had started a small Visual Effects school which I named Vizy Acky. By request it was transformed from a small office in Addison, to an online school for Houdini training (Side Effects Software.)
Vizy stood for visual. Acky stood for academy. I was told Vizy Acky was a dumb name. I was asked weeks later if I was still going to use that dumb name, Vizy Acky. How could I not? They remembered the name.
While Vizy Acky thrived for a couple of years, I had started too early. It was one of the first online schools anywhere. The technology for online teaching was still being developed and starting when I did was expensive and time consuming. Among other things, the effort was not worth the financial and time investment, and I closed the school down about 2015 when I was living in Bellingham Washington.
But I still have my weird brand of Vizy Something. I had managed with Vizy Acky to train and meet many interesting people. Students were from places in Egypt, German, Spain, Argentina, Japan, China, Canada, Australia, Mexico and the US. I had ever continent covered except Antarctic. And some of my students found themselves working together at a studio in Vancouver Canada. I was pleased to have made a contribution. This is why I’ve adopted Vizy Bloggy as the name.
The blog is not about Houdini training. The time has come for me to organize the stories of my experiences I have collected. Part to entertain. Part to hopefully help others navigate their careers. In or out of visual effects.
